Classification History

The Engineering Corps deadlocked between two proposed designations: Exploration Destroyer and Combat Destroyer. Combat Destroyer was rejected on grounds of redundancy, the terms being functionally identical in Navy usage.

The vessel does not fit existing hull categories. She displaces greater than a Frigate, greater than a standard Destroyer, and less than a standard Cruiser. A new class designation was authorized on that basis. WarpStar is the first vessel in Federation service built for exploration, combat, and defense in a single hull.

Design philosophy. Fast heavy attack scout. Approach undetected, deliver a decisive strike, disengage before the enemy achieves target lock. From the original Henderson submission: the ship is not built to survive a fleet engagement, she is built so that no fleet engagement ever happens.

Warning — coolant loss. The nitrogen coolant loop is not a comfort system. Loss of engine cooling permits an overheat cascade that will detonate the antimatter reactor. Assessed lethal radius: 3,000,000 kilometers. There is no containment procedure. There is only the coolant.

Critical dependency. Inertia dampeners, gravity plating, and anti-gravity generators require more than one operational MK-VI reactor. Corvettes, Frigates, and many Destroyers are not fitted with these systems at all. Loss of reactors below this threshold returns the ship to zero-G and unmitigated acceleration loads.

Environment

Heating held at 12 degrees Celsius to deny thermal scan. Artificial gravity offline. Crew operates in zero-G.

Cost

The ship becomes effectively invisible across most of the EM spectrum. She also becomes blind, immobile, and unable to run. Crews report the loss of gravity, not the cold, as the hardest part of the condition.

Doctrinal note. The ship carries a destroyer’s magazine on a hull with a cruiser’s stealth. Doctrine emphasizes the opening salvo. She is not rated for sustained line engagement.

Flight crew structure. The vessel carries no full-time pilots. Flight billets are filled by mechanics and technicians holding secondary flight qualification. Experienced pilots avoid it.

Archive Assessment

WarpStar is not a warship in the conventional accounting. She is a hypothesis with a crew aboard.

The Henderson-Anders antimatter core she carries is the only one that has ever worked, and the FTL drive bolted to it has no precedent in human engineering. Every system in this file exists in exactly one place in the universe.

The loss of this vessel would not represent the loss of a destroyer. It would represent the loss of faster-than-light travel.
