SPCR Patrol Corvette, Research
Listed as a survey and communications research platform. She is not one. Fleet slang calls her a stealth corvette, and the fleet is correct.
Registry Summary
On the designation. The registry lists her as a research vessel. The name is a formality that no one in the fleet takes seriously, which is why officers who have never held an intelligence clearance still know exactly what a stealth corvette is and what it is for.
What She Is Not
The SPCR shares a hull class with the Assault Corvette and almost nothing else.
The Assault Corvette carries her cargo on the outside. The SPCR carries nothing on the outside at all, and that is the single most important fact about her.
Mobility — She Cannot Get There Alone
Like her sister, the SPCR has no faster-than-light capability of any kind. She cannot leave a system. She cannot reach one. Every stealth corvette deployed to contested space was carried there by something considerably larger and considerably louder.
This is the operational paradox at the centre of the type. The Federation’s most covert asset cannot deploy covertly. The corvette is invisible; the ship that delivers her is not. A stealth insertion is only as quiet as the transit that preceded it, and no amount of thermal discipline hides a battleship arriving in a monitored system.
It is also why a stealth corvette was not sent to Sumeria. Not because she would have been detected on station, but because getting her there meant sending a mothership through transit lanes the Russians watch.
Stealth — Principle
Nothing about the SPCR makes her invisible. No field, no screen, no trick of physics hides a hull. Stealth in Federation service is the management of everything a ship emits, and every measure below costs her something she would rather have kept.
The SPCR is the fleet’s silent running condition engineered in permanently, rather than switched on in an emergency.
Thermal — internal heat sinks
Waste heat is stored inside the hull rather than radiated. Reactor output, life support, crew body heat, and electronics all dump into thermal mass.

When heat must be shed, it is shed on a controlled vector, aimed away from the threat axis and never broadside.

The sinks fill. Stealth is not a state, it is a countdown.
Emissions — active sensors
Secured. No radar, no lidar, no graviton jets. Radiating to see means being seen.
Emissions — communications
Receive only while on station. Transmission is a decision, not a routine.
Emissions — drive
No high-thrust burns on approach. A drive plume is unmissable. Ballistic transit and drift where possible.
Signature — radiation
Reactor emissions blocked and redirected rather than allowed to escape the hull uniformly.
Signature — hull
Low-observable coating, matte finish, no specular return. Shaped to avoid presenting flat returns.
The hard constraint. An SPCR on station is running a timer she cannot stop. When the heat sinks saturate she must either radiate, and be seen, or leave. Mission planning is thermal planning.
Stealth — Cost
Every advantage above is bought, and the price is paid in capability.
The doctrine that follows. An SPCR that is detected has already failed, and cannot fight her way out of the failure. She has one defence, which is not having been noticed. Everything else is negotiation.
Sensors
Passive only, and extensive. Where the Assault Corvette carries drones on her hull, the SPCR carries aperture.
Crew and Habitability
Where the SPC devotes half her complement to pilots, the SPCR devotes hers to the people who read what she hears.
Habitability is worse than her sister’s, not better. Waste heat is not vented, which means it accumulates where the crew lives. A long station-keeping mission is conducted in the dark, cold at first, then progressively less cold as the sinks load. There is no gravity plating, for the same reason there is none on the SPC — the hull cannot power it. Unlike a fleet corvette she may hold position without thrust for extended periods, so zero-G is the normal condition rather than the exception.
Archive Assessment
Federation stealth is not a trick of physics. It is a discipline, and the SPCR is what a ship looks like when that discipline is the entire design brief.
She has no drones, no pilots, no meaningful weapons, no ability to run, and no way to call for help. She is a hull full of ears and thermal mass, and she is useful only for as long as she can hold her own waste heat inside herself.
The registry says she conducts research into communications phenomena. In the strictest sense that is true. It is simply not research anyone intends to publish.
