The Apkallu are remembered on ancient Earth as the Seven Sages — beings of god-like wisdom who walked among early humanity as intermediaries between the gods and mortal men, and who, by some accounts, could change their shape at will. Bringers of knowledge and keepers of secrets, they stood between the powers of the sky and the peoples of the ground; much of what humanity first learned, it learned from them.
The Seven Sages
In the oldest Sumerian memory the Apkallu were sages who carried the arts of civilization down to a young species — writing, law, craft, the reading of the heavens. Half-remembered as part-divine and part-fish, wholly wise, they belonged fully to neither the gods above nor the people below, but to the space between.
Intermediaries of the Gods
The Apkallu served as the bridge between the visitors early peoples called gods — whose true nature the archive keeps carefully closed — and the mortal societies those visitors touched. They taught, they guided, and they watched; and whatever the gods intended, it passed through Apkallu hands. To follow the Apkallu is to walk straight toward the oldest and most guarded questions in the record.
Shapeshifters
Legend holds the Apkallu able to take many forms, moving unseen among those they instructed. It makes them nearly impossible to trace, a species defined as much by what it concealed as by what it taught — and one whose reappearance, in any age, would be a matter of the gravest concern.
